GAHC Mission Statement:
"By increasing the supply of financing for quality, affordable housing, the Georgia Affordable Housing Corporation will supplement other sources and support the advocacy work of other entities that serve the housing needs of low- and moderate-income individuals, with a special emphasis on rental housing."
The Georgia Affordable Housing Corporation (GAHC) is a non-profit financial organization that was formally established in 1998, and the organization became a Community Development Financial Institution in 2001.
The development of the GAHC began in 1997 when the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta organized working committees, which included over 80 representatives from the financial services, civic and not-for-profit communities. Collectively, this body of business, community, and philanthropic representatives developed a conceptual and programmatic framework for increasing multi-family affordable housing, which, subsequently, became the mission and ideals for GAHC.
Today, GAHC is a lending source and a technical incubator for financing and promoting the development of affordable housing units for low- and moderate-income households in the State of Georgia. GAHC mainly concentrates its efforts on small and medium sized communities throughout the state. Low- and moderate-income households or families in less densely populated communities warrant the consideration of the organization because of…
- The scarcity of resources available to them;
- Their employment in lower-paying professions; and
- The limited number of affordable housing units available for rent to them.
To accomplish the organization's objective of promoting safe and decent affordable housing, GAHC has:
- Organized a loan consortium to provide permanent mortgages for new construction and to substantially rehabilitate multi-family affordable housing units.
- Initiated collaborative relationships with government, business, civic and nonprofit entities to promote housing policy and practices benefiting affordable housing.
Established technical assistance services to assist developers and sponsors of affordable housing on a consulting basis.
